Lydia and Teddy
As far as I can remember myself we have always had dogs in our family. We had a poodle, a Labrador, and a few mixes throughout the years. A few years after our last dog died we decided to adopt a golden retriever. We have never owned one before but heard a lot about the breed. My husband wasn’t completely sure because he thought golden retrievers can be hyperactive and too friendly, maybe even clingy. We went to see some puppies at the Breeder’s, and we sort of fell in love with them, especially one of them. That puppy became our Teddy.
We had to wait for a few weeks before we could take Teddy home. That was good because we had to prepare. This way we had enough time to get all the necessary supplies and food.
Today Teddy has lived with us for 3 years. What can I say about this dog? First of all, yes golden retrievers are very friendly and very active. It doesn’t mean that you don’t have to work on them. This breed needs training just like any other breed. If you don’t work with your dog, they will grow up uncontrollable, impolite, and badly behaved. It will be an unpleasant dog.
When Teddy was little he used to chew everything he found in his way. He would literally chew up our whole house if we didn’t try and stop it. It took a lot of work, a lot of training, and a lot of discipline before we were able to control his chewing. These days he only chews up his toys from time to time. When Teddy was younger we used to take him to puppy classes, where he learned how to behave during walks, how not to pull his leash, and how to listen to us. This turned out to be very important and very useful and made Teddy a more polite, easier dog to live with. I cannot recommend training or puppy classes enough. You need to understand that you are fully responsible for your puppy and for the type of dog that it will become when it grows up. It all depends on what you invest in the dog when they’re still young. If you teach them to be a polite, well behaved, disciplined dog, this is the type of dog that they will be.
The one downside to a golden retriever that I have discovered, and is that my husband was actually right about, is there extreme friendliness. It is a great quality when it’s addressed to your family. But our golden retriever is super friendly and super clingy with just about everyone he meets out on the street. It does get a little annoying after a while. We try to not let Teddy bother people while we are on the walks.
Of course, the positive side of this is that this dog seems to always be in a great mood and up for anything. They will share their happiness with you every day and give you so many reasons to laugh and smile.
